If arrival time permits us to do so, if not, we can celebrate the Eucharist in a Church near our Hotel to fulfil our Sunday obligation. According to some sources, Our Lady’s Island was the first settlement of Croats in this area. In the 10th century, on the site of today’s church, Croatian Queen Jelena built two churches: that of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Stephen in which the tombs of the queen’s plaque were found as well as the remains of Queen Jelena’s sarcophagus. There were many elms on the island and so the people called this church Our Lady of Brist while the well located west of the church, whose water remained clean after heavy rains, was called Our Lady well. Both churches of Jelena belong to the order of so-called double churches. According to medieval custom, Kings were buried in the church where they were crowned, so it is assumed that the church of Our Lady of the Island was a coronation basilica. Today’s church was built on the same site, approximately the same dimensions, where the of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin is. In 1998, Pope John Paul II visited this shrine and held mass for young people.

Split, Croatia is the second-largest city of Croatia. The city was founded as the Greek colony of Aspalathos in the 3rd or 2nd century BCE of the Illyrian Dalmatae, and in 305 CE, it became the site of the Palace of the Roman Emperor Diocletian. The turbulent centuries after that created a city conceived when the inhabitants of Salona fled towards the Palace before the onslaught of the Avars and Slavs. Many authorities then took turns in the city that grew outside the walls of the palace, magnificent living city as it was, as it is now. Modern times and the 20th “moved” Split from the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, through the tragic but also heroic days of Italian and German occupation in the Second World War when Split was one of the centers of anti-fascist resistance to socialist Yugoslavia to the present day where Split is a part of free and independent Croatia, a member of the European Union. Today, wandering the historic center of Split you can still clearly see the ancient Roman walls, squares and temples.
